Parliament set for Budget Meeting
Parliament is expected to meet from February 13 to April 10 for the 2026/27 Budget Meeting which President Peter Mutharika will open with a State of the Nation Address (Sona).
In a statement issued yesterday, Speaker of the National Assembly Sameer Suleman said the Second Meeting of the 52nd Session will draw Cabinet ministers, deputy ministers, members of Parliament and the public.

“The Office of the Speaker of Parliament wishes to inform all Cabinet ministers, deputy ministers, members of Parliament and the general public that the President will officially open the 2026/27 Budget Meeting on Friday, February 13, 2026 at 10:00am,” reads the statement in part.
The sitting will mark the first full national budget to be tabled by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) administration since it assumed power following the September 16 2025 General Election.
Meanwhile, the Centre for Social Concern (CfSC) has described the meeting as timely, saying Malawians will be looking beyond figures to clear economic direction.
CfSC economic governance officer Agnes Nyirongo said the budget presents a critical test of the administration’s leadership.
She said: “The forthcoming 2026/27 National Budget is more than a routine fiscal exercise.
“It is the first full-year budget of the current administration and therefore its most important opportunity yet to define what kind of economic leadership it intends to offer, one that restores dignity to households battered by rising costs, or one that risks deepening fatigue among citizens already stretched to the limit?”
The current 2025/26 National Budget, which expires on March 31, 2026, was revised upward by K512.6 billion during the mid-year review to K8.589 trillion from the initial K8.077 trillion.
